Ministry to the Poor Brings Growth in A Church – Susan McCarson

Susan McCarson is my friend and traveling buddy. She is a retired teacher who now travels across the US teaching teachers. She also sponsors several of our children in the Philippines. She’s traveled there with us twice and was a blessing to us, the pastors and the children. On our trip last month, she talked with some of the pastors who care for the children. Here is her brief account of one of those conversations.

As Christians, we desire to see our churches grow. We desire to fill the pews. We desire to convert the lost. Go to any Christian bookstore, and you will find numerous books on church growth.  Pastor Franco, and his wife Solis Trigo did not need to read a book on how to attain or manage church growth. They prayed and listened to God.

Franco and Solis Trigo care for 93 of our sponsored children in the Philippines. They have 115 more waiting and praying for a sponsor.

Pastor Franco has been in the ministry for 41 years. He has been in his present city for 21 years.  Until five years ago his church averaged less than 100 persons. Five years ago, things began to change.

Fullness in Christ Ministry partnered with Pastor Franco for sponsoring the poorest of the poor children to attend school. In the beginning, twelve children were chosen from among hundreds to begin their education. In addition to school, the children began to attend church, some of them for the first time. With them came their parents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents.

They heard about the saving grace of Jesus. They learned that Jesus was an advocate for the poor. They saw grace in action. People from the garbage dump, squatter areas and the street begin to have hope through Jesus.

As the number of sponsored children grew, so did the number of people attending church. Ninety-three children are now sponsored by FCM, and the church now serves 300-400 people every week, requiring two expansions of their building over the past two years.

The church growth would not be complete without discipleship. Home group Bible studies occur weekly around the areas where the people live. Pastor Franco carefully mentors those who go to the homes to teach the Word, and they use a book written by the pastor.  Over 400 persons have been saved and discipled.

Perhaps the Lord is asking you to get involved by helping educate a child in body, soul and spirit.  Will you follow the voice?

You can change the live of a child with a mere $30 a month.  Go to Sponsor A Child.

About kathybohlin

I am passionate about helping poor children in Philippines come to Jesus, get an education and become all God created them to be. Right now our ministry (Fullness in Christ Ministries) helps almost 900 of the poorest of the poor children in the Philippines. They are over seen by 24 national pastors whom we consider trustworthy and competent. There is accountability. I am single and contented with that. Also I want everyone to know how wonderful Jesus is!!
