NIÑA, age 13, has lived at the garbage dumpsite as long as we have ministered there and is one of the first children sponsored by Fullness in Christ Ministries. She is a pretty girl whom we have seen every time we have gone for a visit. She always greets us with a shy smile that touches our hearts and makes us feel welcome in her world. She got a late start in school because she was unable to attend in the early years of her life. If it were not for a sponsor Nina would not be able to go to school even now. But she is in 5th grade and determined to finish school. She is the eldest of 6 siblings. FCM sponsors 3 children in this family (Nina, Rose Marie and Rolando).
Life for Nina is not easy because at a very young age she became responsible for taking care of her younger siblings. The mother is always busy with her scavenging in the garbage, searching for items that can be sold so the family will have food to eat. Nina is the one to care for the children. The youngest is 2. Nina has no father to provide, protect and love her and often goes to school with an empty stomach. Nina’s mother is living with another man and the sad thing is, when the man is drunk, he beats the children.
In spite of the difficulties in her life, Nina continues to go to school and is active in Children’s Church at the dumpsite. Nina has dreams for the future. She wants to be a teacher. She will tell you that she believes the only hope she has to fulfill her dream is Jesus. Even though young, she also knows education is very important to fulfilling her dream.
Some day Nina will no longer live at the garbage dump. She will live in a house with an indoor bathroom and sleep in a real bed and cook on a stove instead of a wood fire. She will have a job as a teacher, a Christian teacher. With God’s help and the help of her American sponsor, Nina will break out of the cycle of poverty and fulfill the destiny planned for her by her Heavenly Father.
Her pastor says, “We give God the glory for the sponsors have extended love and care and have touched the life of Nina.”
You too can touch the life of a child like Nina. You can sponsor a child or give to help provide food or other needs of children who live at garbage dumps, under bridges, on the streets or in squatter communities. To help with this ministry to children, go to Ministry to Children.
